The census is a population survey that happens every 10 years and gives the government a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. You need to participate in the census population survey so you or your household can be counted. Organisations such as local authorities and charities use census information to understand the services we all need including transport, education and healthcare.
The census means different things to different people. Academics use census population estimates for predicting population trends, local authorities for planning policy, businesses for product development and store locations, and central government to help share out funding for required services. It’s all about planning ahead with the knowledge of knowing what is required where.
The Census 2021 will produce a high quality estimate of the entire population of England and Wales and will be carried out by the Office for National Statistics. It will also be the first major step to establish the real number of the Iranians living in the UK. The bigger our community in this country the more attention will be given to the needs of our community.
You can start the online version of the census from your smartphone, tablet or computer. Go to www.census.gov.uk and select Start Census and then using your household access code (which you should have received through the post) cto start answering the questions. The whole process will take around 10 minutes.
Question (16) of the Census form is about your ethnic origin or background. The Iranian community in the UK is considered too small to provide a specific tick box in this section (many other minorities including the Arabs have a tick box). There are five categories to choose from. The only way to play our part is to tick OTHER on section A and then write IRANIAN, PERSIAN or BRITISH-IRANIAN. All of these variations will be counted towards counting the members of our community. Please do not answer any other parts of this question except OTHER.
If you are concerned about your personal details you should not be because the census information is highly confidential and only the data without the names or personal details of people will be published.
